As part of the expanding Additive Manufacturing Initiative, the Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) Department is pleased to announce the hiring of a tenure-track assistant professor in metals-based AM.

The Arizona Board of Regents awarded $350,000 of their Regents' Innovation Fund grants to the project "Advancing Additive Manufacturing Frontiers on Earth and Beyond", a joint project between the University of Arizona, Arizona State University, and Northern Arizona University.

Dr. Andelle Kudzal, a materials engineer at the Combat Capabilities Development Command at the United States Army Research Laboratory (ARL), visited campus to give a seminar titled, “Point of Need Additive Manufacturing for the US Army”. 

Students from Materials Science & Engineering (Lucas Stolberg, Morgan Swanson, Kathleen van Atta), Mechanical Engineering (Juan Carlos Martinez, Zachary Ondrejka), and Industrial Engineering (Zachary Minnick) teamed on "Additive Manufacturing Process and Dimensional Control" to compete at Design Day 2019. The project mentor and financial support was provided by Honeywell Aerospace.

Two University of Arizona (UA) graduate students in the Department of Materials Science & Engineering, Anna Hayes and Susana Castillo, presented at the MRS Spring meeting.

UA researchers will collaborate with Honeywell Aerospace to evaluate state-of-the-art, build-simulation metals Laser Powder-Bed Fusion (LPBF) models with a focus on the prediction of dimensional distortion under varied processing conditions. The project is part of a new University of Dayton Research Institute (UDRI)-led program funded by the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA).

The newly formed Advanced Manufacturing, Materials, and Processes (AMMP) program, part of the National Center for Manufacturing Sciences (NCMS), and in collaboration with the United States Army Research Laboratory (ARL), advances AM to create manufacturing breakthroughs.
